هاشم مهمند

Hashem Mohmand (in Pashto: هاشم مهمند) has worked for several decades in contemporary Afghan journalism.
He served as the General Director of the Pashto and Dari services of Radio Azadi and retired in 2019.
He is fluent in Pashto, Dari, English, and German.
Background
Hashem Mohmand was born in 1948 (1327 in the Afghan solar calendar) in Kandahar Province, southern Afghanistan, and currently resides in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.
Education
Hashem Mohmand completed his primary education up to 11th grade at Ahmad Shah Baba High School in Kandahar and finished 12th grade at Habibia High School in Kabul.
He studied law and political science at Kabul University.
After 1972 (1351 in the Afghan solar calendar), he continued his education in Germany.
In 1989, he participated in a 10-month research program at Bloomington University in the State of Indiana, USA.
Career
Hashem Mohmand briefly worked at the Ministry of Planning and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan.
From 1987 to 2019, he worked at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Afghanistan service and is considered one of its founders.
Cultural Activities
During the years of the Afghan Jihad, he was the editor-in-chief of the magazine De Khpalwakay Wazhma (“The Independence Era”).
He has also translated and authored several works, some of which have been published. Additionally, he has written articles featured in various media outlets.

Hashem Mohmand is married and has two children.
