Bad link to RfD[سمول]

In کينډۍ:Diff, AAlertBot made a link formatted as [[Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 October 20#<1>|discussion]] - the link should have been [[Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 October 20#Thames foot tunnel|discussion]], so is the <1> a placeholder for the true link fragment? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:21, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Bump. I've restored this item from Archive 6, after seeing the same issue reported at Template talk:Redirect for discussion#Broken links in the article alerts. – wbm1058 (talk) 21:45, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Greta Thunberg keeps coming back![سمول]

Tried to get her off https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climate_change but she won't split! (even though we don't want to split her article)

Chidgk1 (talk) 15:00, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

That's because it's in Category:All articles to be split because Greta_Thunberg#Honours_and_awards has {{Split section}}. I guess I need to manually exclude templates that are not full article splits. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 18:56, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

A possible issue[سمول]

The article /Drive has been prodded. However it can't be linked to (due to the slash) from Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles/Article alerts so I added a note in brackets with a link to a redirect (with this edit [۱]) for the benefit of anyone trying to find the prodded article. Is this likely to cause a problem for the bot? If so please feel free to revert and/or change my note if I don't do it myself quickly enough. Otherwise I suppose we can wait and see what the bot does tomorrow! A7V2 (talk) 07:57, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

کينډۍ:Re It won't cause a problem as such, but the bot will overwrite the page (and remove the note) next time it updates it. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 10:07, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

Possible bot freeze issue[سمول]

Seems the AAlertBot started running at regular time [۲], and just stalled since. Regards, Jovanmilic97 (talk) 12:56, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

The bot listing a phantom MfD[سمول]

کينډۍ:Diff, the bot listed the page Wikipedia:WikiProject Eurovision/Assessment as having been nominated for MfD. However, I can't find a trace of anything like that happening; the MfD page has never been created and the page itself has not been edited in months. The following day, it said the discussion was closed. Is this some rare bug? ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 01:12, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

See Wikipedia talk:Article alerts/Bugs#Fake MfD alert. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 01:38, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
Ah, interesting. Thanks. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 11:48, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Not running on WikiProject Biography[سمول]

Hi, I added WikiProject Biography to the subscription list, but the bot doesn't seem to be running. Could you take a look? Thanks! 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 22:34, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

کينډۍ:Re Hey! That's because there is a naming clash between subscriptions because all three have that specific name "WikiProject Biography". This should work. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 15:10, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
@EpicPupper Fyi, I have added back the Requested moves for WikiProject Biography subscription because it is transcluded on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography currently. I tried to do a transclusion of the RM section in the Misc report, but it seems not to work. – robertsky (talk) 10:46, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Deletion sorting by Canadian province[سمول]

Just FYI, WikiProject Canada has established a consensus to deprecate the comprehensive set of 13 "deletion sorts by Canadian province or territory", on the grounds that most of them were rarely if ever actually used at all, and even the ones that have been used have virtually never had more than a handful of articles on them at any one time -- and even the main Canadian deletion sorting page itself has never, ever had so many articles on it at once that it actually needed the subsorts as a size management strategy either. Accordingly, all of the 13 provincial or territorial delsorts that were in وېش:Wikipedia deletion sorting by Canadian province have been redirected back to the Canada-wide list. pagelink available?[سمول]

For example Wikipedia:WikiProject Elements/Article alerts: does not have a source link. I could use a کينډۍ:View link. Is there a background reason for this omittance? No edit link I understand, but maybe talk link too? -DePiep (talk) 07:32, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

If you're viewing Wikipedia:WikiProject Elements/Article alerts, why do you need a link to that page? You're already there. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 07:34, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
I got there by having to research a transclusion (backtracking). Which is the background of this question. I note that your reply could be said about every template /doc page, while having V-T-E links. -DePiep (talk) 07:40, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
You're still not answering the question, if you're viewing Wikipedia:WikiProject Elements/Article alerts, why do you need a link to that page on the very page you are currently viewing? Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 08:16, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
IIRC, I was the one asking a question. Meanwhile, your response is some fallacy. -DePiep (talk) 08:29, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Then I hope you enjoy living without an answer. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 14:14, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Why didn't you use my 07:40 reply? -DePiep (talk) 18:00, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
کينډۍ:Re The main reason is because the report pages are transcluded differently, so it's not clear where the parent page would or wouldn't want to place such links. Some reports are in boxes, others as a section, some as columns. A bunch of users are transcluding them on their own pages. So there isn't a standard way. But you can add custom additional content to the page before {{anchor|AAstart}} and after {{anchor|AAend}} tags on the page. Projects usually place their project header above. But you could place v/e/h links or some such and make it include only, possibly with a custom parameter. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 18:06, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! I see. -DePiep (talk) 18:13, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Wiki Lethwei Project Alerts[سمول]

Hi, how long does it take for an alert to appear on the Wikiproject page? I DelProd Nilar Win and I don't see it yet on Wikipedia:WikiProject Lethwei#Article Alerts. Thank you for your help! Lethweimaster (talk) 10:26, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

کينډۍ:Reply Hey! The bot runs once a day in UTC morning. There's a "Last bot run around 07:07, 6 September 2022 (UTC)" message at the bottom of the alert's page. It basically runs at 7AM UTC give or take a few hours based on DST and schedulers. But it's once a day. So that's when it would be reported if the nomination was before that. Your PROD was placed at 08:53, September 6, 2022, which would be a couple hours later. So it will (hopefully) detect it tomorrow and report to the subscribed projects. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 13:39, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the answer! Lethweimaster (talk) 15:39, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Did I do it correctly?[سمول]

I was wondering if or not I subscribed Wikipedia:WikiProject London/Public art correctly to the ArticleAlerts. Can someone take a look once please? Thanks! CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 08:15, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

PROD information enhancement[سمول]

I notice that concern has started appearing next to PRODs on the Alert list. That is a very useful enhancement. AllyD (talk) 07:25, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

This has always been the case, since the very first revision. If they were missing, then there likely was a problem with the template on the page. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 10:21, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
Actually, because I had been seeing only dePRODs recently, I had forgotten the summary previously showed the the rationale in small text, but this week I am seeing concern with the hoverable explanation this week (which is more concise). AllyD (talk) 13:16, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
Oh, right. I honestly have forgotten half the things the code does. So PRODs (or other workflows with user comments) only show the actual comment text if there are 3 or less entries. The idea is that a lot of entries means a lot of text, so it's best to condense it. But if there are very few, might as well list everything. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 21:24, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
Ah, a neat piece of responsiveness to quantity, thanks! AllyD (talk) 07:36, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

AAlertBot forgot to remove Ten Capital News from Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian television/Article alerts[سمول]

Bot1058[سمول]

کينډۍ:User seems to be breaking Article Alerts functionality? If a redirect also has a redirected talk page, the bot "Bot1058" will remove project banners from the talk page, leaving the redirect untracked. So projects will not be informed if the mainspace redirect is nominated for discussion. -- 65.92.246.191 (talk) 06:48, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

That actually shouldn't happen because for redirects the bot checks the target page to match the projects/subscriptions. For example, here most redirects don't even have a talk page. That said, redirects are a mess with lots of corner cases, so it's possible it breaks for some other reason, if you have any missing examples? —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 10:37, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I suspect it will happen, since some redirects are specific to a particular project like "xyz (song)" redirecting to "abc (album)", where the song-redirect would be of interest to WikiProject Songs, but not necessarily the album page, which usually do not include WPSONGS. Discussion of the song redirect at RFD would therefore not notify WPSONGS. Or similarly both redirecting to a biography article, which would usually not include either WPSONGS or WPALBUMS; etc -- with other topics like books. -- 65.92.246.191 (talk) 00:21, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
Hmmm, yeah, that would happen if the redirect isn't tagged and belongs to a different project than the target page. As for Bot1058, it seems to only change redirects targeting disambiguation pages, which themselves are semi-randomly tagged. So the example is more like xyz -> xyz (disambiguation) -> xyz (song). Generally, projects are very random about which ones do or don't tag their redirects and dabs, so I doubt this makes a huge difference in the grand scheme of things when so many redirects are already missing from reports. In any case, I'm not sure what I could do on my end. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 10:47, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Can this bot be used on spanish Wikipedia?[سمول]

I'm still pretty new here so I'm not sure how different Wikipedias operate. Could I use this bot on a Wikiproject on the spanish Wikipedia? If not, can I request as a feature it's implementation on the spanish Wikipedia? Or operation across different-language Wikipedias is not that easy?

Thank you in advance. Irecorsan (talk) 18:10, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Not really, @Hellknowz: can tell you more about the technical reasons, but the main reason is that it very much relies on how the English wikipedia is structured, and you can't easily port that over. The Wikimedia Foundation once accepted to create a bot like this, but they gave up on it because they considered it too complex and not worth spending time on it despite being a highly requested feature by the community. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 18:14, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, what Headbomb said. It's very English Wikipedia specific. There are probably many similarities with other Wikipedias. But there are probably many more differences. I don't know if it's worth going into technical details, because the list of things that need to be changed is very very long. The bot simply wasn't built with any consideration for multiple Wikipedias. Even some of the English Wikipedia non-standard workflows are a big mess to handle. Personally, there's no way I have the time or resources to do this. In fact, quite the opposite - I was hoping WMF can take over the AA tasks and community contributors can expand from there. So for now it's only English Wikipedia until something major changes or breaks. I can always open-source it, but that would likely mean I will not keep working on it (or be able to offer extensive explanations). —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 20:10, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Understood, thank you both for your replies and the great work! Irecorsan (talk) 21:47, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
